In a great example of art NOT imitating life, Munich packs one of its greatest cultural treats into one of its ugliest buildings. The massive Gasteig Cultural Center housed on Rosenheim Hill in the edge of Haimhausen, hosts more than 1700 events per year. The brick and glass complex opened in 1985 to very mixed reactions from city locals, but today houses five performance halls (including the philharmonic which houses 2400 people), the Richard Strauss Music Conservatory, adult education center, and even the largest Munich municipal library, which is one of the largest libraries in Munich.
